Kansas Governor Sebelius Signs Bill to Lower Kansas E85 Tax. . .
The bill changes the way the state taxes E85, 85% ethanol
fuel, by basing the tax on energy content instead of a flat
tax rate. The result is a drop in the tax for E85 from 24
cents per gallon to 17 cents per gallon, a seven cent savings
for E85 users. The bill addresses an inequity in the state
motor fuels tax, while encouraging the use of E85 fuel. In
Kansas, it supports the economy of Kansas from farmer, to
processing plants in communities, to you and me on the road
to independence from foreign oil
The Kansas Corn Commission, United Bio Energy and the NEVC
are working on an effort to add at least 20 E85 stations in
Kansas in 2006.
While E85 fuel offers slightly lower mileage than regular
unleaded, motorists find the drop in mileage is often offset
by a lower price at the pump. The ethanol in E85 is
domestically produced, boasts over 100 octane and is a
cleaner fuel.
Kansas currently has seven ethanol plants that produce 170
million gallons of ethanol per year. An eight plant is under
construction at Phillipsburg and several others are on the
drawing board.

The National Corn Growers Association has compiled the
following information that questions the author's credibility
(Pimentel and Patzek) as well as oil industry influence on
these studies. We have also provided government and
university studies that demonstrate positive energy balance
for ethanol... See Ethanol, the agriculture success story at the National Corn Grower's Assoc site.
